Sampha Steps Into the Spotlight

Your parents were immigrants. Did that influence you?
Definitely. My family is from Sierra Leone. I’m very much into this woman called Oumou Sangaré [a Grammy-winning Malian singer and songwriter]. The rhythms, the way she sings, her cadences, her melodic movement, I find it really entrancing. Also, people like Minnie Ripperton, Tracy Chapman and Stevie Wonder. Even Sia. Oh yeah, Pharrell Williams.
